When I first bought P1i from a mobile shop in Vietnam, it had been pre-flashed with foreign firmware before, (exactly is Middle East) so it got me into trouble. The system font does not perform well when I read documents in Vietnamese, and the memory space for messages is always full although I have two SMS in the Inbox. I had tried to do some Master Reset but the problem still occured. :(

So I did some surfing on the net to find the answer for those problem and I was recommended that I should change my phone's CDA to suitable region and then update the phone's firmware to the lastest version. My friends who have experience in flashing phone said that my region is more suitable to Generic World 2 (GW2) so I decided to choose it for my phone and I did the updating successfully just in 30 minutes!

Okay, I think I should share this since I find it's pretty easy to do. But I recommend you to read this tutorial carefully before continue.

Disclaimer: I’ve tried these steps and it works perfectly for my case, note that I’m not responsible for screwing up your phone, DON'T do it if you feel unsure or unconfident and this may BREAK your phone warranty. So do it at your own risk. I don't really want to see corrupt phones, so if you have any question, feel free to leave a comment. Don’t do anything rash !

Jargon used

CDA - it’s a code that is used to determine the phone’s region to ease the firmware update, each region has it own pre-customised settings like language, fonts used and etc.

For more information about latest firmware for P1i, please visit this wiki.

Requirement

Backup original phone's CDA

  1. Extract XS++ in a folder somewhere in your PC and install it
  2. Start XS++
  3. Check the box "Smartphone connect"
  4. Then click "Connect" [screenshot]
  5. Switch phone off, take the battery out and reinsert (important !)
  6. Plug USB cable to your PC
  7. Keep pressing the "C" or "@" button on the keypad and plug USB cable to your phone
  8. Now your phone will get connected to XS++ and wait for the "Ready for operation" command appears
  9. Now check "GDFS" box from "Configuration" frame and then click on backup GDFS
  10. After a few minutes you will get conformation message regarding GDFS operation
  11. Close XS++ but don't unplug the USB cable for the following process
  12. You will get GDFS backup in the XS ++ installation folder

Change phone's CDA to GW2

  1. Extract EPOC_Smartphone_Version_GDFS_Scripts_Pack.rar‎ in a folder somewhere in your PC
  2. Do the same as 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 steps in Backup original phone's CDA to make the phone connect to XS++
  3. Check "GDFS" box from "Configuration" frame
  4. In "GDFS Script" frame, press "..." button and browse to the *.gdfs you want in folder "EPOC_Smartphone_Version_GDFS_Scripts_Pack" (I chose "P1i_R9G007_R2A03_R6D23_CDA162022_2(GW2)_R6D22.gdfs" to change my P1i's CDA to GW2)
  5. Then click "Run Script" and wait until the process is done [screenshot]
  6. After a few minutes you will get conformation message regarding GDFS operation
  7. Unplug the USB cable and close XS++, I recommend that you don’t touch anything else in XS++!
  8. Now your phone is ready to get the latest firmware update from Sony Ericsson Offical website. :)

Update phone's firmware using SEUS

  1. Don't forget to charge your phone's battery fully and remove the SIM before continue
  2. Connect your PC to Internet (broadband is prefered)
  3. Install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) software in your PC
  4. After installation, SEUS will access Internet for checking updates & then it would start
  5. Now just let everything work on it’s own

When the process is done, congratulations! Your phone is now running on the latest firmware! Enjoy and leave your comments bellow!

———————————

If you are disconnected from Internet in the middle, don't worry because SEUS will download the firmware first and then it will write it to your phone. The whole process will take maximum of 30 minutes (for broadband connection)

Restore from original CDA

These steps are used only when your phone gets trouble

  1. Do the same as 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 steps in Backup original phone's CDA to make the phone connect to XS++
  2. Check "GDFS" box from "Configuration" frame, you will see "Restore GDFS" option
  3. Select the GDFS backup file by clicking the button just below "Restore GDFS"
  4. Then click on "Write GDFS"
  5. After a few minutes you will get conformation message regarding GDFS operation.

You can do a FORMAT INTERNAL DISK from the hidden menu once you have put in the new firmware from SEUS.

With a port of the SE G700/G900 Flash firmware support, our P1i can now play swf files (not flv files yet) :) . A big thanks to SWmail - a super  modder/hacker for UIQ3, you can visit his site to try more intersting mods here.

This mod intended to play Flash contents on Opera Mobile on SE UIQ3 smartphones.

Tested on: P1i (R6G04/R9K009/GW1), P990i (R9GA001/R6E28), M600i, W950i, W960i
Note: G700/G900 smartphones with last firmware already have FlashPlugin.

Installation: (taken from swmail's readme):

Now you can play flash from your smartphone's by using Opera opens link like 'd:/myflash/flash.swf' but before opening, you must do the following:

  • Start Opera
  • Go to More >> Settings >> Configuration >> and tick "Allow Plugins"

Enjoy Flash support! And if you like SWMail's work, you can donate to encourage him to continue :)

PS: after testing on my P1i, I realize that this mod could make the phone play swf files only with small size (less than 2MB), if you play a larger files, the quality will not be very smooth.

lb_anim_150_haLinkBoy provides up to 45 shortcuts to frequently used tasks, that can be optionally displayed on the standby screen. It seems like GDesk has just gotten some competition. :)

Similarly to GDesk, whats great is that the positions of the shortcuts and icons can be changed (the fact that UIQ 3.0 doesn't allow for it in the main menu still boggles me). The Captions under each icon can be changed as well. The standby settings are left intact on the screen, and makes it slightly more convenient than GDesk.

NEW in version 1.52:

  • List of upcoming events displayed when executing the Event active item.
  • Full text display of Note active items.
  • New Active item type: Time and date.
  • Support for passing application parameter from shortcuts.
  • Selectable right softkey action for P990 in flip-closed mode.
  • Improved behavior with the Standby application's Today menu.
  • Numerous additional improvements and bugfixes.

It also has a menu to set transparency for the various shortcuts - something the iPhone users might be in awe about.

The software does not come for free, as opposed to GDesk. Costing at $14.95, it seems to be a high price to pay for to obtain a "stable version of GDesk". You can go here for the details.

sm_anim_240Swiss Manager is one of apps that you must have for your P1i. It provides a task manager, file manager and system information viewer. I think it does the job better than the built-in task manager and I recommend you to install it for your UIQ3 phone.

NEW in version 1.70:

  • Support for invoking functions from other applications (e. g. memory cleanup from within GDesk).
  • Application setup command to configure applications not currently running.
  • New options for instant display of Favorites.
  • New option to perform cleanup on startup.
  • New status icon format displaying large size text.
  • Selectable display of time or free memory on status icon.
  • Enhanced file copy operations.
  • Improved performance and reliability.
  • Numerous additional enhancements, optimizations, and bugfixes.

A pro version with advanced features exists for USD $29.95 but most users should find the free version adequate to their needs. Its compatible with all UIQ3 phones.

You can get the newest version here.

mvnc200screen-addconn-uiq3mShell is a free scripting tool for anyone who doesn't know what it is. Based on the easy-to-learn programming language M, it has a rich phone specific library, thus allowing many to fully explore the phone's potential.

The image on the right shows the screen when running mVNC, an application built using mShell. It's a software that allows the display of the phone's screen on a VNC viewer on the PC, so the phone can be completely controlled from your computer. The app also offers file synchronisation abilities, so scripts can be edited, tested, and executed on your computer before being downloaded to your phone.

If you like to program for your UIQ3 phone, I think mShell and mVNC is the good choice. :)
