Mặc dù năm 2008 đã trôi qua được hơn 4 tháng nhưng tôi vẫn muốn đăng lại danh sách những người viết plugin cho WordPress được download nhiều nhất trong năm vừa qua để các bạn - những thành viên của cộng đồng WordPress Việt Nam - biết thêm về họ cũng như những sản phẩm mà họ làm ra. Để từ đó giúp bạn có cái nhìn cụ thể hơn về hệ thống plugin đồ sộ đang ngày một tăng dần cũng như mức độ ảnh hưởng của WordPress đang lan rộng trong cộng đồng blogger hiện nay.

Dưới đây là danh sách 10 nhân vật nổi tiếng trong giới WordPress đã cho ra những plugin được download nhiều nhất:

1. Michael Torbert
   Tác giả của plugin All In One SEO Pack với 961.306 lượt download, một plugin giúp WordPress đạt SEO khá tốt, ai mà không xài thì quá uổng. :-"

2. Matt Mullenweg
   Tác giả của plugin Akismet với 921.827 lượt download, một plugin chống spam quá nổi tiếng. Matt cũng chính là người sáng lập ra blog WordPress, ông tổ đấy

3. Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan
   Tác giả của plugin WP-Polls với 775.220 lượt download, ngoài ra còn một số plugin khác như WP-Postviews, WP-PageNavi, WP-Print, WP-Email... plugin nào cũng có phần quản lý khá chuyên nghiệp.

4. Arne Brachhold
   Tác giả của plugin Google XML Sitemaps với 628.350 lượt download, không có plugin này thì blog của bạn khó lòng được Google biết đến.

5. Andy Skelton
   Tác giả của plugin WordPress.com Stats với 449.345 lượt download, tác giả còn là một hacker khá pro.

6. Alex Rabe
   Tác giả của plugin NextGEN Gallery với 429.705 lượt download, một plugin tạo gallery cho WordPress, rất phù hợp với blog có nhiều hình ảnh.

7. Oliver Seidel
   Tác giả của plugin cforms II với 361.918 lượt download, một plugin tạo form contact đa năng và chuyên nghiệp.

8. Joost de Valk
   Tác giả của plugin Sociable với 328.036 lượt downloads, plugin này tạo các nút để giúp người đọc submit blog của bạn lên các mạng xã hội, traffic sẽ tăng cao lắm đấy. Ngoài ra còn có plugin Google Analytics for WP

9. Donncha O Caoimh
   Tác giả của plugin WP Super Cache với 246.752 lượt download. Nếu muốn blog chạy nhanh hơn một chút thì bạn nên thử qua plugin này, nó cache khá tốt.

10. Vladimir Prelovac
    Tác giả của plugin Smart YouTube với 244.963 lượt download, ngoài ra tác giả còn có một số plugin khác về SEO rất hay.

Bổ sung thêm một số thông tin lý thú khác:

• Người viết nhiều plugin nhất: Viper007Bond - 25 plugin tại wordpress.org.
• Plugin có số phiên bản cao nhất: cforms II với version 9.4 của Oliver Seidel. Ngoài ra đây còn là plugin được nhiều người bình chọn nhất - 419 votes.
• Plugin có tên dài nhất: Sliding Post - Slides latest posts with Carousel effect (55 ký tự) của dasinfomedia
• Plugin có tên ngắn nhất: mu của Mark Bockenstedt. Nó là một plugin chứ không phải WordPress MU.

Đáng tiếc là người Việt Nam chúng ta chưa có ai được lọt vào top 10 này, tôi cũng có viết 2 plugin nhưng số lượt download rất thấp (dưới 1000) nên không dám mơ tới việc vào top 10, chắc chỉ đáng nằm trong top 10.000 thôi. Nhưng hy vọng trong thời gian sắp tới sẽ có đại diện của plugin "made in VietNam" xuất hiện trong bảng tổng kết này. Các developer của WordPressVN cố lên nhé!

Cuối cùng thì WordPress 2.7 cũng được phát hành bởi nhóm phát triển WordPress. Phiên bản này được người sáng lập ra WordPress - Matt Mullenweg - đặt tên là "Coltrane" dựa theo tên của một người chơi kèn Saxo danh tiếng - John Coltrane mà Matt Mullenweg rất yêu thích.

Mình đã nâng cấp blog của mình lên WordPress 2.7 và mình khuyên bạn hãy nâng cấp cho blog của bạn ngay từ bây giờ bởi vì những lý do sau:

• Blog của bạn sẽ được bảo vệ khỏi những lỗi bảo mật nghiêm trọng.
• Những plugin - theme mà bạn đang sử dụng sẽ được nâng cấp dễ dàng và nhanh chóng.

Nếu bạn đang sử dụng bản Release Candidates, bạn sẽ nhận được thông báo đề nghị nâng cấp blog. Tuy nhiên, trước khi nâng cấp, bạn không cần phải gỡ bỏ tất cả các plugin, bước này không còn cần thiết nữa bởi vì WordPress 2.7 sẽ tự động đặt blog của bạn vào chế độ bảo trì giúp cho quá trình nâng cấp diễn ra tốt đẹp.

Yesterday, WordPress 2.7 Release Candidate 1 (RC 1) has just been released by WordPress.org. This version comes with new interface and new icon set. Bellow is the quote from WordPress.org Blog:

With the release of RC1, we’re in the final leg of development before the release of 2.7.  280 commits since beta 3 have polished the new admin UI (including new menu icons created by the winners of our icon design contest) and fixed all known blocker bugs.

We think RC1 is ready for everyone to try out.  Please download RC1 and help us make the final release the best it can be.  As always, back up your blog before upgrading.

I recommend you to update to this version now. But before updating, don't forget to backup your blog database first!

WordPress 2.6.5 is immediately available and fixes one security problem and three bugs, here is a list of the changes in detail:

• Added a check for the correct post_type to blogger.editPost and blogger.deletePost (#8267).
• Updates to update_post_meta() and delete_post_meta() to ensure they work correctly with post revisions and don’t create the meta on the revision instead of the post (#7925).
• Protection for a very difficult to exploit XSS issue (#8291).
• Fix for an XSS issue with the Atom and RSS feeds on some hosting setups ([9754], [9770]).

Note that we have skipping version 2.6.4 and jumped from 2.6.3 to 2.6.5 to avoid confusion with a fake 2.6.4 release that made the rounds.

There is not and never will be a version 2.6.4

It looks like WordPress is making their job so nicely with 2.7. If you have used Beta 1 or 2, don't forget to update to this Beta 3 via Tools -> Update menu because there’s over 160 changes. Here are a few:

• Dashboard widget options now properly save.
• Numerous style improvements and refinements.
• All admin notices now go under the page title.
• PHP Notice fixes.
• Menu fixes.
• New design for Quick Edit.
• Canonical feed URL fixes.
• Walker fixes.
• An update for Hello Dolly.
• Plugin installer updates.
• Numerous font updates.
• Updated login logo.
• Switch position of “Save Draft” and “Preview” buttons in publish module.
• File upload support for MS Office 2007+ file formats.
• Media upload buttons won’t show if the user doesn’t have the upload capability.
• Canonical redirects only do yes-www or no-www redirection for domains.
• Shift-click checkbox range selection improvement.
• Add New User page now separate.
• Tag suggest only suggests tags (not other taxonomy terms).
• QuickPress shows “Submit for Review” if user cannot publish.
• Private posts/pages, and password-protected posts/pages are rolled into new “Visibility” section of publish module.
